Sao Martinho do Porto Guide

São Martinho do Porto is a vila and the seat of a civil parish in Alcobaça municipality, Oeste region, historic Estremadura, district of Leiria. The 2021 census counted 3,111 people on 14.64 square kilometres. The parish also holds Serra dos Mangues and Vale do Paraíso. The settlement became a vila again in 1990. It had been a town and concelho seat until 1855. The parish lies near 39.51 north, 9.13 west. The station pin reads 2460-873.

The reason to come is the bay, the concha: an ellipse of about 1,800 by 400 metres, three kilometres of sand, an opening of about 200 metres between the points of Salir (Santa Ana) and Santo António. The water behind that slit stays calm enough for families with small children. Nazaré sits a short hop south, a town of about 10,000 in a municipality of 14,889, famous for a recorded 26.2 metre wave in 2020. That is a different sea. São Martinho is the sheltered scallop. People who want the big-wave circus go to Sítio and the fort. People who want to put a child in the water stay here.

The village has two nuclei: the low tourist strip on the sand, and the upper street with ordinary houses and the eighteenth-century matriz. A pedestrian tunnel from the dock side steps onto the open Atlantic. The commercial port faded. Summer still fills the marginal, where the Portuguese page says parking is hard. In 2014 a seal, nicknamed Martinha, drew a crowd. That is a summer footnote, not a plan.

One long day covers the bay, the tunnel, the Santo António hill and the upper church. Two to four nights fit. A third day out earns its keep in Alcobaça (the Cistercian monastery), Nazaré, or Caldas. A full week in the bay is a beach week, not a town week. Do not invent museums.

Do not confuse this São Martinho with other Portuguese São Martinho parishes, or with Madeira. The Alcobaça bay with the Linha do Oeste station east of the sand is the one. The train is usually slower than the bus on this line. Check the live sheet.

The bay, a family sea, a calmer night than Nazaré: yes. A surf-spectacle week, a monastery stay, a winter office: no. You can walk the two nuclei. A car helps for Alcobaça and the A8. You do not need one to cross the village.
