Castelo Novo Guide

Castelo Novo is a granite Historic Village of Portugal on the east slope of the Serra da Gardunha, in the municipality of Fundão, Castelo Branco district. Aldeias Históricas and Turismo Centro frame an amphitheatre of grey stone houses, Manueline pelourinho square and a Templar-era castle ruin at about 650 metres. The 2021 census counted 353 people in the whole freguesia (40.51 km2); the built locality alone is smaller. This guide is that quieter Gardunha overnight: castle lanes, Lagariça and the PR11 historic loop. It is not a Monsanto boulder-village Instagram base. It is not a Sortelha ring-wall day dressed as the same stop.

One night covers the castle, Largo do Pelourinho and visitor centre. Two nights fit if you walk PR11 FND (about 2.6 to 2.7 km circular) and linger at fountains or the river beach soft visitors mention. A week only works as a Beira Interior Aldeias circuit hub, not as a single-village resort calendar. Dining is thin inside the granite core; treat Fundão cherry country and nearby Alpedrinha as the food overflow, without inventing a restaurant street.

From the A23 take the Castelo Novo exit and follow signs into the village; Turismo Centro notes a small free car park on the approaches. The visitor centre sits on Largo do Adro (6230-160). Once parked, climb the labyrinthine granite lanes on foot; hire car is the working chain for linking Monsanto or Idanha as separate days, not as this page.
