Atouguia da Baleia

Atouguia da Baleia is a vila and the seat of a civil parish in the municipality of Peniche, in Portugal’s Oeste region, district of Leiria. The 2021 census counted 9,117 people across about 46 square kilometres; the inland village itself holds around 2,000. Other nuclei in the parish include Casais Brancos, Bufarda, Coimbrã, Geraldes, São Bernardino and, on the Atlantic, Consolação. Ferrel was split off as its own parish in 1985.

This was once a medieval seaport. Silting of the São Domingos and the cove shifted the harbour role to Peniche, which began as an island and later became a tombolo. Peniche gained vila status in 1609 and became a municipality in 1610. On 6 November 1836 Queen Maria II extinguished the older concelho of Atouguia da Baleia and folded its parishes into Peniche. What you walk today is that inland seat: the Romanesque-Gothic church of São Leonardo, scraps of castle wall listed as Imóvel de Interesse Público since 2006, a pelourinho, and a whale rib kept in the church from a stranding dated to 1526.

Most visits work as a half-day of stone in the village, then a night toward Consolação, or a base in Atouguia with short drives of five to ten minutes toward Peniche and the beaches. Consolação is the parish’s tourist nucleus on the water, with a Restoration-era fort built between 1641 and 1645 for the 6th Count of Atouguia and listed as a national monument since 1978. South of the fort the shore is rocky; north, a long sand runs toward Supertubos and Peniche. Families who want a quieter historic street without living inside Peniche’s harbour grid often use the parish that way. Nightlife, a complete castle circuit, or a week of museums fit better in Óbidos or Lisbon.

One long day covers São Leonardo, the castle scraps, the pelourinho, and Consolação if you have a car. Two nights work as a beach-and-village base. A third day earns its keep with Lourinhã, the Cesaredas plateau, or the Berlengas boat from Peniche. The castle is a ruin; the church is the building that still works as a parish church.

Do not treat the parish name as Peniche town, or Consolação as the whole freguesia. The geology here belongs to the Late Jurassic Lourinhã Formation; Miragaia longicollum was found in this ground. That is a palaeontology note, not a guarantee of an open visitor centre.
