Foz d'Égua Guide

Foz d'Égua is a schist hamlet in the parish of Piódão, municipality of Arganil, district of Coimbra, in the Serra do Açor. The name is the mouth: the Ribeira de Piódão meets the Ribeira de Chãs d'Égua here. A small dam holds a pool. The streams then run toward the Alvoco. The 2021 census counted 120 people in the whole parish, 36.57 square kilometres. That figure is not a headcount for this hamlet. Piódão, eight kilometres up the road, is the Historic Village. This is the river stop below it. It is not Foz do Arelho on the Óbidos lagoon.

The hamlet itself is a short walk: schist and slate houses, two bridges, two mills, a lagar, stone cut by the current. The water sits on a fairly level floor. The walk down from the road does not. Visit Arganil flags steep terraces and small schist stairs. That is a morning if you only swim. Stay overnight in Piódão if you want the pool at both ends of the day. A week in Foz d'Égua has nothing to spend it on. Do not book it as a base for Coimbra nightlife, and do not treat the official PR2 loop as open until you have checked Visit Arganil the week you travel. In September 2026 that page still said the trail was temporarily unavailable.

There is no railway here. The chain that works is a hire car from Coimbra, through Arganil or Côja, then the mountain road to Piódão and the further eight kilometres to the confluence. SIT Metropolitano line 403 runs Arganil to Piódão; treat the printed hour as something you confirm on sit-regiaodecoimbra.pt, not as a promise that a bus will drop you at the stairs. Once you are at the water you walk. Bags on wheels stop at the road.
