Foz do Arelho Guide

Foz do Arelho is a vila and the seat of a civil parish in the municipality of Caldas da Rainha, in Portugal's Oeste region. The 2021 census counted 1,400 people on 9.62 square kilometres. The parish sits about eight kilometres west of Caldas, with the Atlantic to the north, Serra do Bouro beside it, and Nadadouro with the lagoon basin to the south. The name means the mouth of an Arelho. There is no river of that name. What meets the Atlantic here is the Lagoa de Óbidos, the longest coastal lagoon on the Portuguese shore: about 6.9 square kilometres, average depth two metres, a shifting inlet the locals call the aberta.

This is not Óbidos town. Óbidos is the walled hill, a few kilometres inland, a municipal seat of about 11,700 in 2011, a day of gates and crowds. Foz is the water parish people in Caldas actually use for sand: an ocean beach with a long marginal avenue, and a lagoon shore that tends to be easier for children, wind sports, and paddle boards. The vila title came on 12 June 2009. The freguesia itself was split from Serra do Bouro by Lei n.º 839 of 5 July 1919.

People who use Foz come to swim two waters in one stay, walk the cordon of dunes, watch birds on a Ramsar site designated in 2025, or sleep out of the Óbidos queue. Couples who want a wall and a tiled street should go to Óbidos for the day and come back. Families who want sand and a lagoon shelf tend to be the ones who stay. Anyone hoping for nightlife of the old Green Hill years, a week of museums, or a café with all-day power will last longer in Caldas, eight kilometres inland, or in Lisbon. A winter Tuesday on the marginal can feel closed. Wind is not a mood. It is the weather.

One long day covers both beaches and a walk along the lagoon edge if the aberta is behaving. Two to four nights fit as a quiet beach base. A third day out earns its keep in Caldas (park, market, ceramics) or inside the Óbidos walls. This is not a city-break week.

Do not confuse this Foz with Foz do Douro in Porto, or with other river mouths that share the word. The Caldas parish on the Óbidos lagoon is the one.

Lagoon and ocean, a bed without the Óbidos crush: yes. A walled-town week, a party strip, a winter office: no. You can walk the village. A car or the A8 hop helps for Caldas and Lisbon. You do not need a car to cross Foz.
