Marialva Guide

Marialva sits seven kilometres south of Mêda, on the left bank of the ribeira de Marialva, district of Guarda. It is one of the twelve Historic Villages of Portugal. Aldeias Históricas splits the place into three floors: the citadel inside the castle, now empty; the Arrabalde that spilled north of the wall; and the Devesa, the lower ground to the south, over the older Roman city. This is not Monsanto. The granite here is a deserted intramural town, not houses under boulders. It is not Linhares da Beira. That sentry looks at the Serra da Estrela from the A25. Marialva is on the IP2, toward the old Côa frontier.

The citadel is a slow morning if you only walk the wall, the keep, the pillory square and Santiago. Stay overnight in Mêda if the point is this ruin plus the municipal seat. A week inside the empty ring has nowhere to spend it. Do not treat the place as a dining street, and do not assign the 2021 parish count of 177 people to the walled hill. Those residents live in the Arrabalde and the Devesa. The old parish counted 255 in 2011.

There is no station under the keep. The chain that works is a hire car: A25 to Celorico da Beira, then the IP2 to Marialva, as the municipality of Mêda writes it. The Beira Alta line reaches Celorico da Beira and Vila Franca das Naves. From there you still need the last kilometres. Once you are in the citadel, you walk. The lanes are granite. Bags on wheels stop at the gate.
