Linhares da Beira sits on the western slopes of the Serra da Estrela, in the municipality of Celorico da Beira, district of Guarda. The official parish name is Linhares. Travellers say Linhares da Beira so they do not land in another Linhares. It is one of the twelve Historic Villages of Portugal. The castle on the granite spur is a National Monument. From more than 800 metres it looks over the Mondego valley. This is not the municipal seat. Celorico da Beira is the cheese town, with its own castle. This is not Covilhã, and it is not Monsanto.
The lanes are a slow morning if you only walk the two castle rings, the medieval forum at the pillory square, and the granite houses. Stay overnight in Celorico da Beira if the point is this spur plus Queijo da Serra the next day. A week inside these lanes has nowhere to spend it. Do not treat the place as a dining street, and do not assign the 2021 parish count of 213 people to a walled-village-only headcount. The old parish counted 259 in 2011. The municipal page still shows that older figure.
There is no station under the keep. The chain that works is a hire car on the A25, then the signed last road into the parish. Aldeias Históricas lists the A25 for Linhares da Beira, as it does for Castelo Mendo. The Beira Alta line reaches Celorico da Beira again after the 2025 rebuild. From there you still need the last kilometres. Once you are in, you walk. The lanes are granite. Bags on wheels stop at the square.
A foral village under a Dinis keep
VisitPortugal treats the slope as a probable Lusitanian hill fort in the old Montes Hermínios, the local name for the Serra. Flax, linho, is the origin it gives for Linhares: a flax field. Romans, Visigoths and Muslim garrisons are on the written record as users of the lookout. The fortified town you walk is a Reconquista town. Afonso Henriques gave a foral in 1169, on the Salamanca model. Afonso II confirmed it in 1217. Manuel I issued a new charter in 1510; the granite pillory with the armillary sphere belongs to that thinning vila. The castle already existed in the first years of Sancho I. Aldeias Históricas dates a Dinis rebuild to 1291. Two granite rings remain: the higher alcáçova with the keep, the lower circuit that once held the early town, four gates, two cisterns. VisitPortugal records a 1189 raid from León and Castile on Celorico, and Linhares hitting the rear; tradition puts a new moon on the arms because of that night. In 1373 Castilian troops took the place on the Almeida to Viseu road. In 1384 the Master of Avis gave the lordship to Egas Coelho; in spring 1385 men of Linhares fought at Trancoso. The clock in the second tower is seventeenth century. Public works from the 1940s rebuilt merlons and roofs after the 17 June 1922 National Monument decree. The old town as a whole is a Site of Public Interest under Portaria 279/2013. The concelho died in 1855.
Cheese in Celorico, shutters on the spur
Linhares da Beira is a granite street, not a dining row. Carry water. If a shutter is open, treat it as luck. The kitchens that keep hours sit in Celorico da Beira, the municipal seat, where Serra da Estrela cheese is the public food, not a tasting menu invented for the keep. Do not invent a second restaurant line under the clock tower. When you do sit down, this is Beira Interior food: bread, oil, goat, a heavy stew, the PDO mountain cheese. Out of festival weekends the spur goes quiet early. This is not Lisbon prices and it is not a food crawl. The parish orago is Santa Eufémia; the matrix church, Romanesque at root and rebuilt in the seventeenth century, holds three panels attributed to Grão Vasco. That is a church floor, not a reservation.
How to reach Linhares da Beira
Fly into Porto or Lisbon, then reach the A25. From there a hire car is the chain that works. Aldeias Históricas puts Linhares da Beira on that motorway, with Castelo Mendo and Almeida. Leave toward Celorico da Beira and follow the signs into the parish. The German-language geography page puts the village about 15 kilometres from the municipal seat. There is no useful drop under the keep. The Beira Alta line serves Celorico da Beira. Infraestruturas de Portugal restored passenger trains Mangualde to Celorico on 6 April 2025, and the full Pampilhosa to Vilar Formoso run on 28 September 2025. Confirm CP the week you travel. From the station the last kilometres are still a car or a booked lift. A municipal bus on the EM 553 has existed; do not treat an old hour as a timetable. Rede Expressos and similar coaches reach Celorico or Guarda, not the spur.
Walk the triangle, then the keep
Cars do not belong in the medieval lanes. Park outside and walk. The old vila is a triangle at the foot of the castle: Largo da Misericórdia at the entrance, Largo de S. Pedro at Cimo da Vila, Largo da Igreja by the keep and the Corredoura common. The civic square is Largo do Pelourinho, with the forum VisitPortugal calls unique in the country: a stone table, a bench, the town arms, over a spring. Next to it the sixteenth-century pillory. Manueline windows sit on ordinary houses, including the arch into the old judiaria off Rua Direita. The castle is two rings at about 820 metres: keep, clock tower, cisterns, adarve. That is granite and steps. Wheels fail here. Aldeias Históricas still lists the Almocreves pavement: about 1300 metres of granite slabs, about four metres wide, down toward the Ribeira de Linhares. The municipality marks PR11-CLB, Trilho do Voo Livre, a 12.5 kilometre loop from the village to the paragliding launch. Castelo Mendo, already on this site, is another A25 Historic Village, in Almeida, not a neighbour you walk to. Idanha-a-Velha is the Pônsul archaeology village, on the A23. Celorico's castle is a different National Monument in the seat.
Euro on a thin granite till
Portugal uses the euro. Cards are ordinary in Celorico da Beira and Guarda. On the spur you should not count on a till. Carry cash if a shutter is even open. This is not Lisbon prices, and it is not a square with ATMs. Plugs are Type C and F, 230 V. The emergency number is 112. Portuguese is the public language; some English appears in season around the castle and the festival. EU roaming works as in the rest of the country. Mobile coverage on the Mondego fold is usable, not an office. Tap water is the municipal supply; walkers still carry bottles on the granite.
When to go, and what this spur is not
Late spring and September are the walking months: the granite is dry enough, the Mondego slope is not a furnace, the castle adarve is usable. IPMA 1991-2020 normals for Guarda, the nearest published table, sit at 1001 metres: July and August means 20.3 C with daytime highs around 26 C, January means around 4 C, a dry summer (July about 14 mm, August about 11 mm), and about 32 frost days a year. The keep is lower, about 820 metres. Do not quote the municipal 180 metres; that figure contradicts the castle height on the same page. Nights still cut. Summer fire risk on the Serra is a reason to read IPMA and ICNF, not a reason to invent a village climate station. The municipality brands the slope the Cathedral of Paragliding and co-organizes a festival. Check cm-celoricodabeira.pt the week you travel; published 2026 dates do not agree across official pages. Do not come without a car if the keep plus Celorico are why you booked. Do not treat this as Covilhã. Do not treat this as Celorico's castle.
