Shuhe Guide

Shuhe is a canal town in Gucheng District, Lijiang, Yunnan. Chinese writes 束河古镇 for the old street and 束河街道 for the subdistrict around it. The ancient town sits near 26.92 north, 100.20 east, slightly west and north of Dayan. It is one of the earliest Naxi seats in the Lijiang basin and a Tea Horse Road market that held. The subdistrict covers about 122 square kilometres and had roughly 9,600 residents. Postcode 674100.

This is not Dayan and it is not Baisha and it is not Shaxi. Dayan is the UNESCO headline, the waterwheel square, the bar street and the rent that emptied houses. Shuhe is the canal village most people reach next, about eight kilometres west, on city buses 5a, 5b, 6, or 11, under thirty minutes from the old town. Baisha sits farther north on the same basin, another ten kilometres toward the murals. Shaxi is a different valley altogether, halfway between Dali and Lijiang on a three-hour bus, with Sideng square and the tea-horse market stone. UNESCO listed Dayan, Baisha, and Shuhe together on 4 December 1997. China has other places named Shuhe, including a town in Sichuan. This guide is the Lijiang canal, not Yanyuan and not Sideng.

People who actually use the place come to sleep off the Dayan bar street and walk water channels in the morning. The old street shows Naxi movement from farming into trade, with Ming murals, the Ming Dajue Palace, and the Qing Sansheng Palace. A Tea Horse Road museum sits in a former temple at the north gate; hours shift with the season. After the heritage listing, most old-town residents rented out. Do not expect a closed Naxi village. Expect canals, guesthouses, and fewer loudspeakers than Sifangjie.

One long afternoon covers the channels and the museum. A night is the stay that fits if the point is to wake beside water instead of a bar. Two nights only if you add Baisha or the mountain. A week in the old street is too much street.

The old town is walkable. Taxis stop at the gates. You do not need a bus to cross the canals. You do need a bus or a bike from Dayan. Lijiang Sanyi Airport is about forty minutes from the city. The railway station sits south. Altitude is about 2,400 metres. The first night after a lowland flight can hurt.

Families who want less crush than Dayan can manage a day. The hard part is altitude, slick stone when it rains, and a ticket economy that keeps shifting. Solo travel works if you can read a bus number. Couples who want a canal evening find one, then find shops anyway. Do not use Shuhe as a place to work.

The canal night, a bed west of Dayan: yes. A deserted Tea Horse caravan, a beach, a month at a laptop: no. You do not need a car inside the old street. You do need a plan for the Dayan bus.
