Baisha

Baisha sits in Yulong Naxi Autonomous County, Lijiang, Yunnan. In Chinese it is written 白沙镇. The town lies near 26.96 N, 100.22 E, with a population of roughly eight thousand, an area of about 246 square kilometres, telephone area code 888, and postcode 674101. Five villages fall under the township administration.

This is the Naxi settlement about 12 kilometres north of Dayan, the packed old town that most tickets mean when they say Lijiang. Long before Dayan became the postcard, Baisha held the valley's political and cultural weight. From 658 to 1107 it served as the capital of a Naxi kingdom. Chinese administration then shifted the centre south to what became Dayan. UNESCO listed greater Lijiang, including Dayan, Baisha, and Shuhe, on 4 December 1997.

China has many places named Baisha. One is a township in the Penghu Islands of Taiwan. This guide covers the Yunnan town beneath Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, in Yulong County: not a coastal island, not a Hainan county, not a Guangxi river town.

Travellers come for a quieter stone street than Sifangjie, the Baisha murals, and a half day away from Dayan's crowds. Bus 6 runs from the north gate of Black Dragon Pool (about 1 yuan as of 2019), or you can cycle the roughly 40-minute route. Fares and schedules change; check the board when you arrive. Nightlife, shopping streets, and a week of bars remain Dayan's territory, for better or worse. Anyone hoping to work from a café with all-day power will last longer in new-town Lijiang.

One long morning covers Sanyuan's Baisha Street and the mural courtyard. Stay overnight if you want the village after the day buses leave. Two nights only make sense if you add the mountain or Lashihai. Do not stretch a half-day town into a wilderness retreat. UNESCO's own assessment noted that most residents of the old towns rented out and left.

The town is walkable. You do not need a taxi to cross Sanyuan. You do need a bus, a bike, or a car from Dayan. Lijiang Sanyi Airport is about 40 minutes from the city. The railway station sits south of the old town. Altitude is about 2,400 metres. Fly in from the lowlands and the first night can hurt.

Families who want less crush than Dayan can manage a day. The hard part is altitude, sun, and a ticket economy that keeps shifting, not crime in the tourist sense. Solo travel works if you can read a bus number. Couples who want a quieter Naxi street find one, then find shops anyway. Baisha is not a place to set up a remote office.

The mural morning and a night north of Dayan suit this town well. A deserted Naxi kingdom, a beach, or a month at a laptop do not. You do not need a car inside the old street, but you do need a plan for the Dayan bus.
