Broto Guide

Broto sits quietly in the province of Huesca, Aragon, Spain, right on the edge of Ordesa National Park, and it feels like base camp before you've even unpacked. Stone houses line narrow lanes, the mountains close in on every side, and the sound of the river never quite fades. You come here to start something, whether it's a short evening stroll or a full mountain day.

The signature moment is the Sorrosal via ferrata, which starts right in the village and climbs a vertical wall beside an 80-metre waterfall. Grips, handrails, small bridges and a short tunnel dug into the rock carry you up over about two hours, and near the top you get views over the whole Broto valley and the raw power of the water below. Even if you've never climbed before, the roar and the spray make it feel like an achievement, not just a walk with gear on.

If via ferrata isn't your thing, the Cascada de Sorrosal is visible from most of the village anyway, and a short walk from the road to Oto brings you right up close. Keep going and you reach Oto itself, a hamlet less than a kilometre from Broto that rewards an easy evening stroll. Save this one for after dinner, when the light softens over the valley.

For more adrenaline, Broto is a launchpad for hiking, mountaineering, white-water kayaking and canyoning, all within reach of the village. Guided enduro mountain-bike routes here even finish with a zip-line, which sums up the local attitude: go big, then celebrate.

Further into the park, the Ruta de la Pradera de Ordesa leads to the Cascada de la Cola de Caballo, the Horse Tail waterfall, passing the Arripas waterfall and the Soaso rock walls along the way. It's a proper day out beyond Broto, not something you squeeze in before lunch.

For experienced mountain walkers, Broto also works as the starting point for a serious day trip to the glacier cirque of the Cilindro, near Monte Perdido. It's a big day in the high mountains, and coming back down into Broto in the evening, tired and a little sunburnt, is part of the reward.
