Siavonga Guide

Siavonga sits on the northern shore of Lake Kariba in Zambia’s Southern Province, at 16.54 S, 28.71 E. The town is the Zambian gateway to houseboat cruises, kapenta fishing and visits to the Kariba Dam wall – not to Victoria Falls or the Zimbabwean Kariba town across the water.

Lake Kariba is the world’s largest reservoir by volume, about 280 km long and up to 100 m deep, holding roughly 185 km³ of water. The 128‑metre‑high dam, opened on 16 May 1960, sits in the Kariba Gorge. Siavonga offers a relaxed lakeside atmosphere, abundant birdlife and opportunities to spot hippos and crocodiles. The local Tonga (Batonga) community, displaced when the lake filled between 1958 and 1963, still lives along the shore.

A houseboat charter lets you spend one or two nights drifting along the lake, with meals and sunset views. Fishing for kapenta or larger species such as tigerfish, tilapia, nembwe, vundu and barbel is popular. Walking along the dam wall – which doubles as a border post into Zimbabwe – gives a sense of the engineering scale. Wildlife spotting from shore or boat lets you see hippos, crocodiles and a rich array of birds. Visiting nearby villages offers insight into Tonga traditions and history.

A minimum of two to three days is recommended. A single day from Lusaka (≈2½ h drive) lets you see the dam and take a short boat ride, but staying an extra night on a houseboat or in town allows deeper exploration and relaxation.

October to March brings warm days with summer rain, ideal for water activities. April to September offers warm days and cooler nights, good for wildlife viewing and fishing.

From Lusaka, take the tarmac road south for about 2½ h; no passenger rail or airport serves Siavonga directly. A car or lodge transfer is needed to reach the dam wall and many lodges; walking is possible from the jetty but distances between sites can be long. The dam crest itself is a border crossing into Zimbabwe, where Kariba town lies on the opposite bank. Victoria Falls is accessed via a separate road network and attracts a different crowd.
