Pralognan-la-Vanoise Guide

You are in a small Savoie village inside Vanoise National Park, created in 1963 as the first national park in France, between the Tarentaise and the Maurienne. In Arpitan the name is Pralonyan. About 689 people lived here in 2023. The postcode is 73710. The village sits at about 1,400 metres, at the meeting of the glacial valleys of the Glière and the Chavière. It is the last commune of the Bozel valley in Tarentaise. You are at a park gateway for hut-to-hut walking, not in a mega ski station of the kind that borders the park.

Mule tracks that are now walking paths cross to the Maurienne over the Col de la Vanoise at 2,517 metres and the Col de Chavière at 2,796 metres. Neighbours include Courchevel. Large stations hem the park: Les Trois Vallées, Tignes, Val-d'Isère, Les Arcs, La Plagne. Those stays are a different valley and a different week. On the Italian side the ground continues as Gran Paradiso National Park. Together the two parks cover more than 1,250 square kilometres.

You come to walk the GR 5 and GR 55, to start a park day, or to sleep in a commune of a few hundred rather than in a purpose-built resort. The 1992 Winter Olympics used the ice rink here as the curling venue for Albertville and the surrounding Alps. That is a civic hall that hosted curling, a fact of the valley, not a reason to expect a city.

If the weather holds, one full day covers the village streets and a valley walk. Two to four nights fit if you are walking hut to hut on published paths. A week spent only in the commune is a long village stay unless the park is the point. A storm does not turn the streets into indoor shopping.

A single drivable road reaches this valley head: the D 915 through Brides-les-Bains, La Perrière and Bozel. The road ends a few kilometres on at a parking that opens the Chavière valley. There is no railway station in the commune. Treat the last kilometres as a bus, a taxi, or a car you have checked the week you travel.

If you want a gentle lakeside town, look elsewhere in Savoie. If you want a park start and a quiet night, the village works. French is the working language. Signal thins in a fold of the massif, so download a map before you walk toward a col.
