Figeac Guide

Figeac sits on the Célé, in the department of Lot, region Occitanie. Occitan still writes the name Fijac. The commune counted 9,793 people in 2023 on 35.16 square kilometres. Heights run from 170 to 451 metres. Postcode 46100. This is a sub-prefecture, one of two in the department, and one of the three urban communes in Lot with Cahors and Pradines. It is not a postcard hamlet. People live here in winter.

The old streets still follow a medieval plan in sandstone. The town carries the label ville d'art et d'histoire, and it sits on the list of Grands Sites d'Occitanie. Walkers know it because the GR 65, the modern line of the Via Podiensis toward Santiago, comes through. Jean-François Champollion was born here on 23 December 1790. The Place des Écritures carries a granite copy of the Rosetta Stone at ten times the original, fourteen metres by seven. That is the one fact most visitors remember. The rest of the town is a working Lot centre with an IUT on the heights, a rebuilt station, and a free minibus.

People who actually use Figeac come for the old town on foot, the river, a night on the pilgrim path, or a base for the Célé and, if they have a car, Rocamadour or Conques. Couples who like stone streets and a quiet evening tend to be glad they came outside July crowds in the very centre. Families who want a beach can go to the Atlantic. Anyone hoping for a week of nightlife, warm swimming, or a shopping street of the kind you find in Toulouse will last longer there. A café with all-day power exists in a town this size, but Figeac is not a place to invent an office week.

One full day covers the old streets, Saint-Sauveur, Notre-Dame-du-Puy on its hill, and the Champollion ground. Two days fit if you walk a stretch of the GR 65 or follow the Célé toward Marcilhac-sur-Célé. A third day only earns its keep with a car for Rocamadour, about 42 kilometres northwest on the D 840, or Conques the other way. A full week in the commune itself is too much commune.

Toulouse lies about 121 kilometres away. Bordeaux 209, Montpellier 184, Lyon 254. Those are crow-flies toward real cities, not ticket hours. The door is the station south of the Célé, a junction on the Brive to Toulouse line via Capdenac and the line toward Arvant and Aurillac. Night trains from Paris toward Rodez still call. The passenger building burned on 21 and 22 November 2018 and reopened in 2023, with the official opening on 31 August 2023.

Do not confuse this Figeac with a farm or hamlet that shares a syllable somewhere on a French map. The Lot sub-prefecture is the one with postcode 46100, the Célé, and Champollion's name on the lycée. There is no second famous Figeac.

The old town, the river, a pilgrim night: yes. A beach week, a museum capital, a party street: no. You can walk the centre. The free town shuttle, La navette, has run since September 2003. A car helps for the causses and the abbeys. Summer parking in the tight streets is the usual French small-town argument.
