Nowe Warpno is a town in Police County, West Pomeranian Voivodeship, in north-west Poland. Kashubian writes Nowô Wôrpino; German still uses Neuwarp. About 1,100 people live here on a lagoon, not in a city. The town sits near 53.73 north, 14.28 east. Postcode 72-022. Elevation about 1 metre. The town area is about 24.5 square kilometres.
It sits on the Nowowarpieński Peninsula between Nowe Warpno Bay, an inlet of the Szczecin Lagoon, and Jezioro Nowowarpieńskie, a lagoon lake shared with Germany. Across an 800 metre strait is Altwarp, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. A small uninhabited Polish island lies about 70 metres off the German shore. Szczecin lies 46 kilometres north-west; Police, the county seat, 30 kilometres. The nearest road border crossing is Hintersee, 14 kilometres away.
People who actually come are mostly from the region, and from Germany across the water. They come for a lagoon marina, a timber-framed town hall from 1697, and the feeling of a border that is now an EU line. There is no night street, no museum week, no café that works as an office. A day from Szczecin, or one quiet night, fits the ground. A week in eleven hundred people is too much town.
A ferry to Altwarp still runs in season on some schedules; the duty-free shop ended when Poland joined the European Union. Confirm the boat the week you travel. Do not treat a sentence about a historic ferry as a timetable. The road way in is through Police County, not through a coastal motorway of hotels.
Families who want a Baltic resort should look at the open coast, not this lagoon pocket. Couples who want a border evening can have the quay and a wind. Solo travel works if you can read a Polish ticket window and accept that Tuesday in November is shut. Do not use Nowe Warpno as a place to work.
The lagoon, the German shore you can see, the small town hall: yes. A substitute for Szczecin or Świnoujście: no. You do not need a car inside the old core. You do need one, or a pre-booked lift, to arrive from Szczecin when the bus is thin. Postal code 72-022.
How a lagoon burgh kept burning down
Town rights date to around 1295, with the first name Wapene tied to a 1184 document of Duke Barnim I on an island joined to the land by a causeway. Some historians doubt that 1184 line and start instead from a mid-thirteenth-century grant of Magdeburg law, with the form Nova Warpe in 1352. Either way this was a small Pomeranian harbour that Szczecin disliked because it held customs privileges. Fires ate the place. 1491 took church, hall and the archive. 1555 again. 1692 again, after the town had passed to Sweden in 1648. The hall that stands, timber-framed, went up in 1697. Prussia took the town in 1720. On 10 September 1759 a naval action of the Seven Years' War was fought on the lagoon nearby. After 1945 the German population left and the town became Polish Nowe Warpno. Twin towns today include Ueckermünde, just over the water on the German side of the same shore. It was never a large port. It was a customs pocket that kept being rebuilt on the same spit.
Eating in Nowe Warpno
Nowe Warpno is not a restaurant town. What opens in season follows the lagoon: fish, potatoes, soup, a cake in a room that faces the water. You are in West Pomerania, a few hundred metres from Germany. Menus, when they exist, are in Polish; German is often understood on the quay. A dark Tuesday in November is a poor night to arrive hungry. If you walk the peninsula, take food. This guide does not list rooms.
How to get to Nowe Warpno
There is no passenger railway in Nowe Warpno and no airport. The last real city is Szczecin, about 46 kilometres away. Police is the county town on the way. Check the current county bus the week you travel. Do not treat an old seasonal timetable as a clock. A car from Szczecin through Police is the arrival most people actually use. From Germany the land crossing is Hintersee. The water crossing to Altwarp is a separate question: a ferry still appears on some schedules. Confirm it live. Schengen means you do not need a duty-free story. You do need a document that works at a small border. Szczecin Goleniów Airport is the nearest passenger field in the voivodeship. It is not a door you walk out of into this town. Plan the last hour as a road.
Moving around Nowe Warpno
The old core is a peninsula walk. You do not need a bus to cross the town. The gmina also takes in former villages: Podgrodzie on the headland, Karszno, and others. Those are car or bicycle distances, not a tram. There is no metro and no taxi rank as a city would have one. A summer marina means boats, not a city harbour service. If you came to see Altwarp, the strait is 800 metres of water. Swimming it is not a crossing plan. The ferry, if it is running that week, is the crossing plan. If wind and low ground in a wet year are a problem, the quay is already the story. The rest is a lagoon town at one metre above the water.
Money and staying connected
Poland pays in złoty (PLN), not euros, even though the German shore is in the euro. Cards work in ordinary Polish towns. A lagoon kiosk in October may still want cash. Bring some from Szczecin. Nobody publishes a Nowe Warpno daily budget. The cheap shape is a day from a city bed. The dear shape is assuming a resort street exists. Plugs are Type C and Type E, 230 V. Emergency number 112. Postcode 72-022. eSIM and EU roaming behave as they do in the rest of Poland. Café Wi-Fi is not an office. Download an offline map before the last city. Tap water in municipal Poland is generally treated as drinkable. The lagoon is not a swimming-pool story in a wind.
Weather, manners, and what goes wrong
This is the lagoon, not the open Baltic. Wind moves the water. Summer is when the marina has a pulse. May and September are quieter. Winter can freeze the story shut. Bring a shell. People live here. It is a gmina seat, not a deserted film set. Keep quay nights quiet. Polish at the counter. German often works with visitors from Altwarp. The border is real even when the shop is not duty-free. The usual errors: arriving without a plan for the last ten kilometres. Treating the ferry sentence as a clock. Expecting Świnoujście. Walking toward Germany across water.
