Nong Khai Guide

Nong Khai is a provincial capital on the Mekong in northeast Thailand, in Isaan near the Lao border. Thai calls it เทศบาลเมืองหนองคาย; Lao writes ໜອງຄາຍ. The town sits near 17.88 north, 102.75 east, postcode 43000, in Pho Chai subdistrict. Roughly fifty thousand people live in the city proper, enough for a market day and a riverside promenade but not a metropolis.

This is the Isaan border town for Vientiane, not Bangkok and not a beach. The First Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge crosses the Mekong here. Vientiane lies about twenty kilometres from the bridge. Bangkok is 626 kilometres by road, Udon Thani 60. The rail spur to Thanaleng, outside Vientiane, opened on 5 March 2009 after construction began in early 2007. The bridge itself opened in April 1994, the first across the lower Mekong, largely funded as an Australian gift to Laos. It is 1,170 metres long, two road lanes, two footpaths, and a metre-gauge track in the middle.

People who use Nong Khai come for the river, a day into Laos, and Sala Keoku, also called Sala Keaw Khu or Wat Khaek, the concrete sculpture park east of town. Nightlife, a beach week, a month of malls: Udon Thani or Bangkok. Anyone hoping to work from a riverside café will last a morning and then meet a town that works as a place to slow down, not a supper-club strip.

One full day covers the Mekong promenade, Tha Sadet Market, and a tuk-tuk or bike to Sala Keoku. A second day earns its keep as the Vientiane crossing: immigration, the shuttle on the bridge, and a return the same afternoon if the stamps allow. A third night is padding unless a festival holds you, or you add Phu Phra Bat in Udon province. A week in the city centre is too much centre.

The town is flat enough to bicycle. Tuk-tuks are the public transport: 20 to 30 baht a person in the centre if you bargain, more to the bridge. There is no metro and no tram. The station is the northeastern line's end from Bangkok via Khon Kaen and Udon Thani, 10 to 12 hours. The nearest Thai airport is Udon Thani, 56 kilometres, about an hour in a minivan that meets flights, around 200 baht.

Families who want sand should not come, unless January to May has dropped the river and Jomanee beach has appeared near the bridge, a seasonal sandbar with mats, not a coast. Heat, a border queue, and a visa rule you did not read are the practical problems. Solo travel works. Couples who want a river evening are the usual fit. Do not use Nong Khai as a place to work.

The Mekong, Sala Keoku, a Vientiane day: yes. A beach-resort week, a party street, a laptop month: no. You do not need a car inside the pedestrian river centre. A motorbike helps for the park and the bridge.

Do not confuse this city with Nong Khai province, which lost its eastern districts to Bueng Kan in 2011. Do not treat Thanaleng as Vientiane station. Postcode 43000.
