Bundi Guide

Bundi sits in the Hadoti region of Rajasthan, India, wrapped around a hill crowned by Taragarh Fort. More than fifty stepwells are sunk deep into the rock below it. Fort and palace complex rise together above the old town, setting the scale for everything you'll explore here.

Wander the maze-like lanes below the fort and you find an intricate mosaic of heritage and scenic beauty. Blue-washed walls give way to a quiet courtyard or a painted doorway around almost every corner. Inside Bundi's Garh Palace and its Chitrashala at Ummed Mahal, you'll find some of the most striking paintings anywhere in India. Walls are covered in miniature scenes of hunts, festivals and court life. Give yourself unhurried time here; the detail rewards a slow look rather than a quick pass through.

Bundi earns its reputation as a city of stepwells at Dabhai Kund, the largest in town. Carved steps descend in tight geometric rows toward the water below. It's the kind of sight that photographs never quite capture, and standing at the rim gives you a real sense of the engineering underfoot.

Lake Jait Sagar spreads out beside a small garden and Shikar Burj, once a royal hunting ground. It's now a good spot for adventure seekers keen to explore on foot. Nearby, Sukh Mahal's shimmering white walls sit beside gentle ripples of water, one of the calmest corners in Bundi. Stay at a lakeside base such as Nawal Sagar Palace and you're within easy reach of both.

Lake Nawal Sagar itself is a large square-shaped lake dotted with small islands. A half-submerged temple to Varuna sits in the middle, its stillness reflecting the town above. A short walk brings you to Keshav Rai Temple, where chants drift out beside the Chambal River and add a quiet note to the visit.

Put the fort, the palace, the stepwells and the lakes together and you get a slower, older Rajasthan. It's one that rewards you for wandering rather than rushing. Bundi doesn't perform for visitors the way its bigger neighbours do, and that's exactly its appeal.
