Serifos Guide

Serifos is a western Cycladic island in the Aegean, south of Kythnos and northwest of Sifnos, about forty kilometres north of Milos and roughly one hundred seventy kilometres east-southeast of Piraeus. It belongs to the Milos regional unit in the South Aegean. The island covers about seventy-five square kilometres and had 1,241 residents at the 2021 census. The highest point is Troulos at 585 metres. Postcode 840 05. The island sits near 37.16 north, 24.47 east.

This is not Milos and it is not Ios. Milos is the larger southern neighbour with more geology and more beaches. Ios is the party hop further east. Serifos is the smaller western stop on the Piraeus to Sifnos and Milos run: a barren, spring-fed island with a port at Livadi and a white Chora on a hill about 4.5 kilometres and 230 metres above the bay. Chora holds a few hundred year-round residents, more in summer; the town count is smaller than the island total. Most visitors sleep in Livadi. That is the honest split.

People who actually use Serifos come for a few beaches, the Chora walk, and a ferry that already stops here on the way to somewhere louder. Couples who like a harbour evening and a steep white town tend to be glad they came in the shoulder season. Families who want shade and a pushchair will find the donkey path and the heat harder work than any safety worry. Anyone hoping for Ios nightlife, Milos's geological week, or a café with all-day power and English at every till will last longer on those islands or in Athens. English is thinner here than on the famous stops.

One full day covers Livadi, Livadakia beach over the Poundi path, and a bus up to Chora with a walk down the old kalderimi. Two to four nights fit. A third day out only earns its keep with Mega Livadi's mining ground, Panagia's tenth-century church, or a hike you start before the heat. A week on Serifos is a beach-and-path week, not a town week. There is no regular summer kaiki to the far beaches, unlike many islands. Plan around that or hire something you have checked.

Myth put Danaë and the infant Perseus on this shore, and Perseus later turned King Polydektes to stone with Medusa's head. Romans used the island as exile. Venetians held it after 1204. Iron left through the 1960s. The 1916 strike at Megalo Livadi, four workers killed, is the modern fact locals still remember. It is not a tourist anecdote.
