You come down off the Teke Peninsula toward Kumluca, in Antalya province on Türkiye's southern coast, and the road drops between mountains that close around the town on three sides like a pair of open hands. Kumluca is not styled for tour buses. It's a working town where sea, forest and mountain genuinely meet, and you notice that blend before you notice anything built.

Inland, Kumluca's fertile plain runs for about 15 kilometres from the coast, boxed in by the Beydağları mountains to the west and east. From a high bend in the road the plain looks like a sea of glass, glinting where the sun catches thousands of greenhouse roofs. This is one of Türkiye's fastest-growing local economies, and you feel that energy the moment you hit the town centre — shops open late, cafés are full, and nobody seems to be waiting for tourists.

Then there's the coast: a sparkling blue sea that runs along beaches nobody has bothered to oversell. Kıyıbandı beach stretches for 10 kilometres and is the district's real showpiece, while Mavikent, a low-key resort area of holiday houses, has its own stretch of sand at Mavikent Beach. Closer to the centre, Kumluca Kentpark Halk Plajı and Kumluca Obalar Plajı give you an easy swim without driving anywhere.

Gunay Beach Park suits families who want room to spread a few towels, and Deniz Beach Cafe, known locally as Alice Beach Park, pairs a swim with a coffee in the Yeşilyurt neighbourhood. If you want a livelier scene, SeSi Beach Event leans social. Go early in summer — every one of these places fills up fast once the sun gets high.

Up on a hill near Sarıcasu sits Rhodiapolis, an ancient city with panoramic views, and nearby the Saricasu Viewpoint gives much the same reward over green hillside and sea; if you've got kids, add an afternoon at Kumluca Cistern Hill Zoo. Beyond the ruins, agritourism tours take you into the greenhouses to taste what's growing, cycling tours cover the fields and villages, and guided hikes head into the highlands. The Alakır Valley runs down from those hills to the coast, where locals still fish the Alakır stream, and the Bridge near Limyra makes a quiet stop if you're passing.

With an extra day, push further along the coast into the Olympos-Beydağları Coastal National Park, which covers part of this shoreline. Adrasan, 24 kilometres away with its own 2-kilometre beach, deserves a full day of its own. Kemer-Çıralı's 3-kilometre beach is another 30 kilometres out, and beyond it you can walk the well-preserved theatre and tombs of ancient Olympos, or spot the Gelidonya Lighthouse, the highest on Türkiye's coast.

Kumluca suits nature lovers and history enthusiasts more than sunbed collectors. Its tourism infrastructure is still thin in places, and that's exactly the point — you get real beaches, a real hilltop ruin, and a real Turkish town, before anyone gets around to polishing it.

From Rhodian Hilltop to Greenhouse Plain: Kumluca's Story

Kumluca's story runs from a Bronze Age wreck just offshore, through the Rhodian and Lycian city of Rhodiapolis, to a farming town that has only existed since 1830. A shipwreck loaded with copper ingots turned up just 50 metres from the shoreline in early April 2019. Up on its hill, Rhodiapolis was founded by settlers from Rhodes, one of only a handful of Rhodian colonies alongside Gagai, Phaselis, Korydalla and Olympos, and later joined the Lycian League as a fully Lycian city. The earliest remains found here are Classical-period rock-cut tombs. The town's most famous resident was Opramoas, a hugely wealthy philanthropist who lived during the reign of Antoninus Pius, between AD 138 and 161. Between AD 114 and 131 he was honoured four separate times with a bronze statue, a gold-plated icon and a gold wreath, and in AD 131-132 the Lycian League went further still, voting him annual honours for a generosity that, by his own account, reached every city in Lycia. Rhodiapolis still has the theatre, a Roman bath, an agora and stoa, temples, cisterns and stretches of old houses scattered across the hillside. The theatre itself is small and Greek in plan, sitting at the centre of the site, with a church perched above it, facing west. Start there, then walk south-west behind the stage: that's where you'll find the monument tomb carved with 64 inscriptions recording Opramoas's official honours. Centuries later, in the late Seljuq period, silver dirhams were struck here under the mint name Sarıkavak, between 1282 and 1302. The town you walk through today only dates to 1830, when it was founded as Sarı Kavak, becoming its own municipality in 1958 after splitting from Finike. Vegetable growing took hold from the 1940s, expanded through the 1960s, and became the greenhouse economy you see everywhere on the plain once growers switched to glass and plastic in the 1980s.

Tomatoes, Oranges and Etli Ekmek in Kumluca

In Kumluca you eat straight from the plain, with greenhouse tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers, sweet oranges and watermelons grown a few kilometres from your plate. That produce owes its flavour to alluvial black soil, built up where several river deltas met the coast over centuries — genuinely some of the richest farmland in the region. Getting to Kumluca: From Antalya Along the D400

Kumluca lies about 90 kilometres west of Antalya on the D400 coastal highway, so almost every trip here starts at Antalya's airport or bus station. Antalya Airport is the nearest airport, with domestic flights and some international services, and it sits roughly 110 to 111 kilometres from Kumluca by road — plan on that stretch taking a chunk of your arrival day, especially if you land in the afternoon and want daylight left for the drive. Driving from Antalya takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes along the D400, which tracks the coastline west the whole way, past small towns and glimpses of the sea before the road turns inland toward the plain. If you plan on beach-hopping between Kıyıbandı, Mavikent and the smaller coves, having a car from day one makes life a lot easier — you can rent one once you arrive, but it saves time to land already driving, and the drive itself is a scenic warm-up for the trip. Dolmuş and buses connect the town with Mavikent, Adrasan and Olympos, and separate bus and taxi links reach Finike and Antalya if you're heading further afield, though schedules can be infrequent outside peak season. Taxis handle short trips within the district — Kumluca Taksi runs a round-the-clock service, and Mavikent karaöz nöbetci taksi covers the Mavikent and Karaöz side. Rhodiapolis sits within 10 kilometres of the town centre and is reached by car, taxi or local bus, not on foot. Agree a pickup time with your driver before you start the walk up to the ruins, since there's nowhere to hail a ride once you're at the top. Withdraw what you need in the centre before heading out to the coast or up to the ruins, since machines thin out the further you get from town. Keep a few small notes on you for markets and tea houses, where a card isn't always the smoothest option, and change is often easier with cash in hand anyway. Concrete prices are hard to pin down for Kumluca overall, but one useful data point stands out: entry to Rhodiapolis is free, and only a guided tour on top of it might come with a small fee. Budget mainly for food, transport and the odd guided walk rather than entrance tickets, and you'll find the district notably easier on the wallet than the resort towns further along the coast, with rarely a queue at the machines outside high season.
