Kalkan sits on the Mediterranean coast of Antalya, Türkiye, in the ancient region of Lycia, and it still feels like a well-kept secret. White-washed houses stack up the hillside, their balconies spilling over with bougainvillea in shades of pink and magenta, and the whole town tilts gently down toward the sea. Not far along the coast, the Blue Cave throws unusual blue reflections across its walls as sunlight filters through the water, and boats regularly stop there so passengers can swim inside.

Walkers can join the Lycian Way, the long-distance trail that runs all the way from Fethiye to Antalya, at Bezirgan, a village just 3 km inland from town. From Greek Kalamaki to a Fishing and Holiday Harbour

Kalkan grew up as a Greek-speaking fishing port once called Kalamaki, home to a substantial Christian community until political upheaval forced the Greeks to leave in 1923. Many resettled on the nearby Greek island of Kastelorizo, while others moved to the Attica region near Athens. The town kept trading long after its population changed, and the name Kalkan is the one that stuck. Walk the marina and you can still read that history in stone. Reaching Kalkan: Dalaman Airport, Buses and the D400

Kalkan is easiest to reach from Dalaman Airport, about one hour and thirty minutes away by car, with long-distance buses running the length of the coastal D400 road. Antalya Airport is further away and reached only by road, so most visitors choose Dalaman instead. The town itself sits right on the D400, the coastal highway that runs between Fethiye and Patara, and for transport Kalkan leans more on Fethiye than on any other hub nearby. Regional buses run roughly every two hours between Kalkan and both Antalya and Fethiye, and Pamukkale operates a regular service specifically on the Fethiye route. If you land at Dalaman without a car booked, heading first to Fethiye and changing there is usually the simplest way in. For long-distance travel, buses from Istanbul run six times a day and take around 15 hours, routed via Gebze, while the trip from Izmir is a shorter seven hours.
