Kemer sits on the Gulf of Antalya in Türkiye's Antalya province, with the western Taurus Mountains rising directly behind the town. It's a small resort, and you feel that scale immediately: wherever you put your towel down, you look up from the water to pine-covered slopes instead of a skyline. That closeness is what makes the town feel different from the flatter resorts further along this coast.

Kemer's beaches carry blue-flag status, though don't expect soft sand: most of the shoreline is pebble and shingle. The main strip runs east of the clocktower, a narrow shingly stretch lined with sun loungers, while Moonlight Beach (Ayışığı Koyu) mixes sand and shingle right by the marina, backed by the greenery of Yörük Park. Beach clubs like Amor Beach Club Kemer and Sir Williams Beach Club give you sunbeds and a bar without leaving the centre. Pack water shoes; the pebbles are kinder to feet with them on. Moonlight Bay also has a small aquarium and dolphin park, which plenty of visitors skip as a tourist trap.

In the evening, the pedestrian zone becomes the town's real stage: a promenade and shopping street where everyone ends up walking after dinner. Stop for a photo at the Pegasus statue, a Bellerophon-themed landmark added to the town in 2020, then keep going toward the harbour. If you want a late night, the clubs cluster at the north end of the beach; Aura runs April to October, 22:30 to 04:00. With kids instead, look into the Land Of Legends Night Show Transfer.

Kemer's marina is where the boats leave from, and a sightseeing or fishing trip with an outfit like Eliza Yacht fills an easy afternoon. About 3 km offshore, the rocky islets of Üçadalar ("three islands") reward snorkellers and divers with clear water. Two wrecks lie just 1.5 km off the harbour, the Paris II resting at around 33 m.

Just north of town, Göynük Canyon cuts about 4.5 km through the rock, strung with pools, waterfalls and shaded trees that make it a favourite for anyone into nature sports. Canyoning and zipline tours run through it if you want more than a walk. Go in the morning, wear clothes you don't mind getting soaked, and budget half a day.

Head inland and the road out of Kemer hairpins toward Gedelme, passing the Kemer canyon, a smaller gorge with a Roman bridge and pools. Gedelme's show cave, about 100 m long, opens daily from 09:00 to 17:00, a cool break from the heat.

Further along the coast, Tahtalı rewards an early start with sunrise views and thin mountain air, plus hiking, biking, climbing and paragliding from the summit. Cennet Koyu, or Paradise Bay, hides down a track off the road to Phaselis, a quiet cove worth the detour. At Çıralı-Yanartaş, a natural flame has burned out of the rock so long it gave rise to the Chimera myth, close enough to treat Kemer as your base.

A flood wall, sunken ruins and a resort born from the sea

Kemer takes its name from a stone wall built between 1916 and 1917 to hold back mountain floods, after the village of Eski Köy had already been battered by water and disease. Locals said the finished wall looked like a camel, and the name Kemer stuck. In 1910, floods rolling down from Kızılcık Dağı had already left a lake and swamp where the village stood, and the population had also been thinned by an outbreak known locally as "İspanyol", the Spanish flu. Until the 1960s the only way in was by boat; once a road connected Kemer, the World Bank helped fund the infrastructure that followed. Tourism took over almost completely from the 1980s onward. Park Marina opened in April 1986, and the Kemer 2000 project of the 1990s filled the coastline with holiday villages and all-inclusive hotels. Older layers are still here if you look. Near Ayışığı Cove, the ancient site of Idyros was excavated by the Antalya Museum in 1976-77, turning up Byzantine wall remains, a church with mosaic floors and a chapel, worth a look on your way to a swim at Moonlight Beach. Inland, the Seljuk hunting lodge known as Selçuklu Av Köşkü stands in the forest where the road from Antalya via Kumluca enters Kemer; its walls and roof have survived in decent shape even though the entrance gate is gone, and its roof still carries the seal of Suleiman alongside a hexagonal star. Further into the hills, Gedelme castle is little more than a few scrappy walls from a 9th-century Byzantine fortress, standing next to a plane tree said to be about 2,500 years old. Fifteen kilometres south, Phaselis was founded in the 7th century BCE by settlers from Rhodes and once ran three harbours: North, War and South. Walk its wide main avenue down through Hadrian's Gate, past the old shops, bathhouse, agora and theatre, and finish with a swim off the ruins.

Fish, kebabs and Balkan grills around Kemer's harbour

Kemer eats mostly by the water, with restaurants and cafés strung along the beaches and around the marina, serving everything from pide and kebab to fresh fish and Balkan grills. Many hotels also sell day passes for their pools and beach access, so a long lunch can turn into an afternoon by the water. Standard fare everywhere is pide, kebab and börek, and it rarely disappoints. For proper seafood, Balıkçı Faruk on Dörtyol Boulevard keeps serving fresh fish until 03:00, having opened again at 09:00 the same day. Down at the marina, several restaurants do seafood and steak side by side, and Turkuaz Restaurant in the centre is a reliable choice for both, plus other Turkish classics. For something cheaper and quicker, Paşa Kebap on Atatürk Caddesi serves inexpensive kebabs from 11:00 to 23:00. If you want a change of cuisine, Monte Kemer cooks Montenegrin and Bosnian food; order the pleskavica or the cevapcici. Steak House For You, out in Çamyuva, keeps its grill going from 15:00 to 01:00 for anyone making a day trip that direction. For an evening with music, Captain Pirate Restaurant Bar mixes dinner with live sets and a DJ, though tables fill fast. For coffee and something sweeter, try La Cafe M.Callas or the tiny No:6 Coffee, both in the centre, or Alex Cay Ocagi if you'd rather have tea and a snack the local way; The Lombak cafe & cocktails switches over to cocktails once the sun goes down. The district grows its own oranges, lemons, tangerines and pomegranates, so look for them at the stalls, and stock up for self-catering at one of the supermarkets around the clocktower: Oscar, Şok, A101, Migros or Carrefour all have branches there. If you're heading toward Ulupınar, the trout restaurants there serve fish farmed a few steps away.

From Antalya airport to Kemer along the coast road

Kemer lies 43 km west of Antalya, and from Antalya's international airport you can drive the D400 coastal highway and be there in about an hour. By car it's roughly 70 km from the airport, and the three tunnels opened between Antalya and Kemer in April 2010 smoothed out what used to be a slower drive. Without a car, Antalya's bus station runs two useful lines: TA07 leaves every 15 minutes and winds through Beldibi and Göynük, while TA08 leaves every 30 minutes and continues on to Çamyuva, Phaselis and Tekirova. There's also a dolmuş option that runs either as an Express service on the main road or the slower way along the old coast road through Göynük and Beldibi. Staying in Göynük or Beldibi, take TA07; heading further south to Çamyuva or Tekirova, take TA08 instead. Long-distance coaches pull into Kemer Otogar, the bus station about 1 km west of the centre where the road meets the D400; Pamukkale Turizm, Metro Turizm and Özkaymak all serve it. A taxi straight from Antalya costs around €50, often the least hassle if you're travelling with luggage or in a group of two or more. You can also arrive by sea: Kemer's marina doubles as a wintering base for liveaboard sailors from the US, England and elsewhere in Europe, so boats are as much a part of the arrivals scene as buses.

On foot, by dolmuş and by boat once you're in Kemer

Kemer is compact enough to explore on foot, and once you want to go further, the clocktower (Saat Kulesi) is where every local bus and the KEMER TAKSİ rank both start from. Use it as your meeting point if your group splits up during the day. From the marina, bus 1 runs out to Kiriş beach, bus 4 heads to Kuzdere and bus 5 goes to Arslanbucak, while dolmuş minibuses run the length of the main road through Göynük for anywhere in between. On the water, boat taxis leave the marina for nearby coves and islands, and the same boats run along the coast to villages like Beldibi if you'd rather arrive by sea than by road. Go out in the morning and time your return before the afternoon heat sets in. Getting to Göynük Canyon takes about 45 minutes on foot from Göynük, or you can rent a jeep, book a 4x4 safari or hire a motorbike instead; car hire in Göynük itself is easy through ANG Rent a Car or aventra Rent a Car. Once you're at the entrance, a further 2-3 km mountain trail, walkable or bikeable, leads into the canyon proper. Book a rental early in high season, since the small local fleets sell out. For the Tahtalı cable car, the base station sits 7 km up a lane off the D400 near Phaselis, and bus TA08 conveniently stops right at the Tahtali Teleferik junction on its way past.

Lira, euros and Wi-Fi: budgeting for Kemer

Kemer runs on the Turkish lira, but plenty of shops quote prices in euros too, and cards are accepted almost everywhere alongside cash. It's worth comparing the lira and euro price before you pay, since they don't always match exactly. Much of the town's economy runs on low-cost all-inclusive packages, but the accommodation options don't stop there: you'll find everything from budget stays like Doc's Hotel Kemer to large resorts such as Crystal De Luxe Resort & Spa or Limak Limra Hotel & Resort, so your budget shapes where you end up more than availability does. Excursions have their own price tags worth planning around: the Tahtalı cable car costs 1200 TL return for adults and 900 TL for children, and getting to the base costs a further 250 TL by shuttle from Kemer or just 100 TL from the highway junction, so riding TA08 to the junction first and picking up the cheaper shuttle there saves money. Down on the beach, the water park at Çamyuva charges €50 per person for the slides and pools. Summers are long, dry and often push past 40°C, so bring sunscreen, light clothing and a jacket for cooler evenings. Plan hikes and the canyon for the morning, before the heat peaks.
