Filzmoos Guide

Filzmoos sits in the St. Johann im Pongau District of Salzburg, at about 1,000 metres. On 1 January 2026 the municipality counted 1,515 people: 776 in Filzmoos and 739 in Neuberg. The name first appears in 1333 as In dem Viltmoos, a marshy high valley used by shepherds. Zell am See is a different town, down in Pinzgau.

You come for a high village under Dachstein ground. Torstein, 2,948 metres, is the high point in the municipality and a tri-border summit. Bischofsmütze, 2,458 metres, stands in view; you also see that peak from Gosau, which makes the two places neighbours, not the same valley. The commune shares in the UNESCO Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut landscape. Winter is skiing. Summer is walking. Both are mountain seasons. Check lifts and paths the week you travel; a season on the calendar is not a promise that every route is open.

If you want limestone and a high village, Filzmoos fits. Families who can accept a mountain winter or a walking summer will manage. If you need a lake resort or a week of indoor museums, go to the lake town and leave this municipality alone.

One full day covers the village of Filzmoos and a walk you have already checked. A second day makes sense if you add Neuberg, or if you sit under Bischofsmütze long enough for the light to change. A week only here is a long stay unless the paths or the snow are why you came.

Most visitors arrive by road through Pongau, toward the Mandling valley and the Enns. Check the current bus before you travel. You can walk the village. To arrive when the local service is thin you will want a car, or a ride you have already arranged.
