Turgutreis sits on the western tip of the Bodrum Peninsula, in Muğla, Türkiye. It's a resort on the west coast of the peninsula, in the Southern Aegean region, and a neighbourhood of the wider Bodrum district. From here the shoreline curves away in both directions, and the sea is never far, wherever you're standing.

Don't come expecting a sleepy old fishing harbour. Turgutreis is modern and busy, and its beachfront is lined with restaurants, bars and apartment blocks rather than tangled old lanes. Steep mountains run parallel to the coast. The shoreline breaks into a string of small inlets, and that gives the town its shape: more workaday energy than old-world charm.

What you do get is sand. Turgutreis has 5 km of beach, backed by waterfront restaurants and bars. The stretches north of town are narrower but sandier than the stonier coves back toward Bodrum. Locals rate the sunset from the town's westernmost point among the best on the peninsula. Günbatımı Plajı, the public beach in Bahçelievler, is named for exactly that view. Closer to the centre, Turgutreis Halk Plajı draws locals and visitors alike for its clean sand and calm water.

Life here also happens on the water. The marina works as the town's hub for boat traffic, and trips head out from it to nearby islands for snorkelling and diving. A steady north-west wind, the Poyraz, keeps the exposed coast busy with windsurfers and kayakers. Afternoons often end with sails and boards drying on the sand.

Out past the marina lie 14 named islets, close enough that the Greek islands of Kos and Kalymnos are visible beyond them. Çatalada, an uninhabited, scrub-covered island 5 km west of town, is a favourite for snorkelling and scuba diving. The wider archipelago is often called one of the Aegean's finest panoramas. Shark Point, or Fener Burnu, marks the sea from a rocky spur. Old windmills line the ridge west of the bay, half-ruined but still catching the last light at sunset.

A short ride in either direction opens up more of the peninsula. North, an attractive small fishing harbour sits about 7 km from Turgutreis. Karaincir Plajı, another popular beach, lies within 10 km along the coast. Kadıkalesi and the Bağla area make an easy side trip. Aspat Beach in Akyarlar is close by too, near the ruined Byzantine fortress known as Strobilos or Çıfıt Kalesi. Bodrum itself is near enough for an afternoon, its old castle now a museum of underwater archaeology. Hiking trails across the peninsula climb up above Turgutreis, for anyone chasing a wider view.

That's the rhythm of a stay in Turgutreis: beach in the morning, boats at midday, and the sun going down somewhere spectacular. Walk the shore toward Yahşi Plajı or Deve Beach for a quieter stretch of water. Or slow down under the trees of Şevket Sabancı Parkı before the evening crowds gather along the marina front. Wherever you end up, the peninsula's edge is never far away, and neither is the sea.

From Karatoprak to Turgutreis: A Farming Village Renamed

Turgutreis carries the name of an Ottoman admiral, but this stretch of the Bodrum Peninsula was farmed and fought over long before that name arrived. Nearby Aspat, the ancient site also known as Aspartos, points to settlement long before Ottoman times. The Ottomans took control of the whole area after Bodrum fell in 1522. The region turned predominantly Islamic in the centuries that followed. The neighbourhood itself was founded in 1485, in what is now the Karabağ area of town, centuries before anyone called it Turgutreis. For a long stretch of its history the local economy ran on mandarins and vegetables rather than tourism. It was a farming village rather than a resort, its rhythms set by harvests instead of holidays. That changed on 11 February 1972, when the settlement of Karatoprak was officially renamed Turgutreis. The new name honoured the Ottoman admiral Turgut Reis, who had been born nearby in the very village being renamed for him. It was a single administrative date. But it carried real symbolic weight, tying the town's new identity to a naval hero rather than its farming past. You can still trace that history on foot today. The Turgut Reis Monument stands as the town's most direct tribute to the admiral. A separate memorial sits a few kilometres from the centre in Sabancı Park, worth the walk if you want the fuller story. Look too for the old windmills on the ridge west of the bay. Built to grind corn into flour, they worked from the mid-18th century until the 1970s. That same high ground is what gives Turgutreis its sunset view today.

Where Turgutreis Eats, from Pide to Waterfront Meze

Turgutreis feeds its summer crowds with everything from a fast pizza chain to a row of waterfront fish restaurants, and you rarely need a reservation. For a quick bite there's a pizza chain open daily from 09:00 to 22:00, handy between beach sessions. Closer to the mosque, Fatma Bacının Yeri turns out pastries and pancakes each morning, open from 09:00 to 17:00, and it's worth timing breakfast around it. Pide fans should also look up Samsun Pidecisi Nuri Usta while they're in town. Down on the water, one restaurant serves fish and meze daily from 14:00 to 02:00, late enough for a long, unhurried dinner. Rıhtım and Savarona sit close by. They're similar waterfront spots that keep the same easy, plate-after-plate pace long into the night. If you want a change of pace, Indomood Resto serves Indonesian food and works mostly as a delivery kitchen. It will still seat you if you call ahead, and it's open from 08:30 to 22:30. For dinner with a view, Amiral Cafe & Restaurant sits right on Günbatımı Plajı, the beach named for its sunsets. Timing a meal there for early evening is one of the better food decisions you can make in Turgutreis. After dark, the town's main street fills with pubs and bars for a slower kind of evening away from the beach crowds. Cosy, well-rated spots such as Target Bar are worth seeking out if you'd rather finish the night with a drink than a dessert. Eat early if you want a table on the harbour front in high season. The best waterfront spots fill fast once the sun goes down.

Reaching Turgutreis: Milas-Bodrum Airport, Buses and a Stop in Bodrum

Almost everyone reaches Turgutreis through Milas-Bodrum Airport or a long-distance bus that lands first in Bodrum town. Milas-Bodrum Airport, with the code BJV, sits about 35 km from Turgutreis, close enough for a straightforward taxi or transfer once you land. Traffic on the coast road can add time in peak summer weeks, so build in a little slack either way. Long-distance buses make the trip too, and plenty of travellers arrive this way instead of flying. From Istanbul it's around 11 hours on the road. From Izmir it's closer to 3 hours. Both routes end at a bus station with good onward connections to major Turkish cities, so continuing on somewhere else afterwards is rarely a problem. It's a long way to come by coach, but it's a steady, budget-friendly option if you'd rather not fly straight in. Arriving by sea takes more planning than either of those. Ferries no longer sail direct to Turgutreis from the Greek islands of Kos, Kalymnos or Leros. Turgutreis itself isn't a port of entry, so any boat coming from Greek waters has to dock in Bodrum first to clear immigration and customs. Build that extra stop into your schedule if you're island-hopping in from Greece, rather than assuming a straight run into town. It's a scenic detour if you have the time, hugging bays and headlands along the way.

Buses, Boats and Walking Around Turgutreis

A network of numbered local buses fans out from Turgutreis in every direction, and the town itself is small enough to explore on foot. Bus 2-34 runs into Bodrum's Yeni Otogar every 10 minutes, daily from 07:00 to 00:00. It stops along the way at Gürece, İslamhaneleri and Akçaalan. It's the route you'll use most, whether you're heading in for the day or just catching a connection onward. Heading other directions, bus 2-32 runs south to Akyarlar every 2 hours between 07:00 and 18:00. Bus 2-45 heads north to Gümüşlük and Gümüşkaya on an hourly schedule from 08:00 to 21:30. Bus 2-37 covers more ground still, reaching Gümüşlük, Yalıkavak, Gündoğan and Göltürkbükü every 1 to 2 hours between 07:30 and 21:30. Dolmuşes fill in the gaps to villages such as Çamarası and Dağbelen, so you're rarely stuck waiting long for a ride somewhere. Within Turgutreis itself, walking covers most of what you need, since the town is small enough to cross without transport. Taxis are easy to find for trips further out to nearby villages, day or night. The marina works as the hub for local boat traffic too. Boat taxis run over to the surrounding islands whenever the sea is calm enough. If you're tempted by a day on Kos, a small transfer boat makes the crossing in 1 hour. Book it a day ahead in high season. Seats go quickly once the weather turns reliably good, and turning up on the morning rarely works.

Lira, Wi-Fi and What Things Cost in Turgutreis

Turgutreis runs on the Turkish Lira, and a card machine or a cash machine is never far away. Most restaurants, hotels and shops take major credit cards without any fuss. ATMs are easy to find around the marina and along the main street, so topping up cash takes only a few minutes. It's still worth carrying a little cash for small things, like a beach snack or a dolmuş fare. Connectivity is easy too, and has been for a while now. As of March 2023, 4G coverage from all Turkish carriers reaches Turgutreis and the roads along the coast. A local SIM keeps you online almost anywhere you travel, from the beach to the hills above town. Free Wi-Fi is common in cafés and public areas as well, handy for topping up a data plan before you head out. For a rough sense of budget, a basic campsite around town charges about 80 TL. A rocky-beach B&B near Gümüşlük comes in around 1500 TL for a double. A breezy resort on the Akyarlar headland runs about 2500 TL. Treat that spread as a rough guide rather than a fixed price list, since it runs from simple to indulgent, and none of it accounts for high-season surcharges.

When's the best time to visit Turgutreis? Summer brings warm weather and a sea that's genuinely good for swimming, while late spring and early autumn offer milder days if you'd rather avoid the peak heat and thinner crowds along the beach. Either shoulder season still leaves the water warm enough for a swim most afternoons. What should I pack? Sunscreen, a hat and light clothing cover most of what you'll need for long days on the beach, since the sun here is stronger than it looks from the shade. Is Turgutreis a quiet, historic fishing town? Not really, and it's better to know that before you arrive. It's modern and heavily trafficked rather than old-world charming, so come for the beaches and the marina rather than expecting a sleepy harbour. Think lively resort town, not a preserved old quarter. Is it easy to get around if you have mobility issues? It can be tricky in places. Turgutreis sits on a peninsula with a rocky beach and hilly terrain, and that combination makes it less suitable if you have limited mobility. Plan routes in advance if steps and slopes are a concern for you. Can I drive right up to the best viewpoint? Not all the way, unfortunately. The road up to Bayrak Tepe is rough, and you'll need to walk the last stretch on foot to reach the view at the top.
